weekend escape

We all want to live long and healthy lives and we know our physical health is important, but sometimes we forget about our mental health and looking after our minds. Everyone deals with chaos and stress, whether it’s at work or at home – and nothing cures it better than some fresh air and a little TLC (and maybe a bit of wine). So for a perfect city escape we’ve planned the ideal weekend itinerary in one of our favourite spots just north of Brisbane.

Head to the hinterland of the Sunshine Coast, otherwise known as the Glass House Mountains. Only an hour or so drive from the city, it’s close enough to leave after work on a Friday afternoon and be settled in by sunset.

Stay at the Tree Houses of Montville – it’s slightly out of the main town which means you get complete peace and quiet whilst sleeping high amongst the tree tops. You may even be lucky enough to spot some local wildlife hopping along the path. There are a lot of great places to eat in Maleny and Montville, but to make sure you’re not worried about which one to try on your first night, make a booking at Montville Pub. This family owned and run establishment dish up superb food and is matched with excellent, friendly service. They’ll even pick you up at your hotel and drop you back there when your done!

Enjoy a sleep in or rise early to enjoy a walk to Kondalilla Falls. The entrance to the National Park is only steps from the tree houses and there are a number of circuits you can take depending on your fitness level and how far you’re willing to walk. We did the Kondalilla Falls Circuit – although it is relatively steep, it provides incredible views over the valley and a peak of the rock pool above the falls and it only took about an hour return. The rock pool is also a popular spot amongst the locals to take a dip, so if you visit during warmer months, make sure you bring your swimmers.

There a lot of different hikes around Montville and Maleny so pop into the information centre, grab a map and start exploring. But if the great outdoors isn’t your thing, then perhaps you’ll enjoy the retail therapy in town, a trip to the local winery or do some serious indulgence at a day spa.

No matter how you spend your time – don’t forget to stop, take a long deep breath and remember just how lucky you are!
