How long have you been planning Sugars Rd for?

We have been building Sugars Rd for five years now.  We originally wanted to open our own free standing store but decided two years ago that online is the way to go. It is much more convenient for our customers and it is definitely the way of the future.

What made you decide to go into business together?

My background is in retail (10 years). I’ve been managing for six of those years and most recently visual merchandising for the past three. Mum [Lynette MacKinnon] decided to go back to study and did a business diploma so as she was completing her degree we were having a few wines one night and came up with the idea of going into business together.  It’s kind of perfect as she handles all the accounts and paperwork and I do the creative side – styling,  buying,  social media,  merchandising.  I’m also a freelance stylist, professionally, so that helps a lot too.

Where did the name Sugars Rd come from?

It took quite a while to come up with a name. We threw quite a few different ones around for a while and then after about two years we came up with Sugars Rd.  It’s the name of the street that I grew up on and I’ve always loved the sound of it.  Once we heard it out loud we knew it was perfect.

What has been your favourite part of the whole experience so far?

My favorite part would have to be the photo shoots. We have an amazing group of people who help out on the day and it’s always lots of fun.  Also seeing reactions to the clothing is always pretty cool. As a buyer it is interesting to see what the items are that people love. Sometimes I get it wrong but I love it when I get it right.

What is your ultimate goal with Sugars Rd?

I think our ultimate goal would be for Sugars Rd to be a house hold name for all fashion lovers.  I would also love to get involved with up and coming local designers and feature them on our site.

What are the big brands you sell? And what are the top selling products at the moment?

We stock four different clothing brands at the moment and two accessory brands.  Our most well known brand is Bebe Sydney and we love everything they have to offer. We have a more higher priced brand called Pizzuto that have stocked up with some amazing one-of-a-kind pieces.  We stock the eyewear label Quay Eyewear and they have the most amazing sunglasses – definitely our best best selling items.  We stock 10 different pairs from them and they sell very quickly. Our best selling clothing would be the pop art tanks, they are super affordable cotton tanks with all different kinds of prints on them. I pretty much live in them.

Anything else you want to add?

When I’m buying I think of all Australian women.  Not all of us can run around in playsuits and short shorts so I try and cater to everyone. When I go to buy something I think… ‘Would girls my age wear this?  Would women in their 40s/ 50s wear this?’  If yes to both then it’s a go ahead.  Obviously there are items that cater to one or the other but most of our stuff is for every woman.
